A tsunami is coming.

A tsunami is coming.

The #metoo movement feels like it was a turning point over the past month. When that first started, I shed tears for two reasons. One: women and men everywhere felt like they could break their silence. And they are courageous for that. Two: women and men everywhere felt the need to begin victim blaming and silencing them (“This #metoo movement will never actually create change” “Why didn’t they say something sooner?” “They are just trying to get attention or get money from famous, rich men.”)

My tears quickly turned into anger. I am fed up with this absolute bullshit. Women in general are fed up. And we are collectively boiling. But what happens when we actually start breaking open in anger? We again face criticism. “What a bitch!” “She must be PMSing” or worse – publicly humiliated, labeled, and fired from jobs (apparently you can get fired for a hand gesture toward a man who was hired to the highest office as a known sexual predator) #WTFamerica.

We can no longer just shake our heads in disgust. The #metoo movement comes after we sat through this past election season as an entire nation dehumanized Hillary Clinton; despised her simply because she is a woman. You know what I despise? Sexual predators – people who believe their power entitles them to threaten or even suggest sexuality in any form to be used as a tool for manipulation or coercion.

I wanted to scream when I read recent responses about Ray Moore – the Republican Senate candidate in Alabama who victimized teen girls. Trump says a “mere allegation shouldn’t be allowed to ruin a person’s life,” but doesn’t bother to mention the victim’s ruined life. Mitch McConnell said he should withdraw from the Senate race “if these allegations are true,” yet fails to explain why numerous women’s testimony was not enough. Or when Sean Hannity claimed that it was “consensual,” but he was 32 and she was 14. Consensual? Really? This is the bullshit I’m talking about.

As happy as I am that the movement has created a conversation, I continue to have steam shooting from my ears. And you know what? That’s ok. We need to remain angry to continue being heard. We are not weak, we are not fragile.

We are the earthquake that creates the tsunami.
